The United States Postal Service (USPS) has reinstated air transportation for a portion of First-Class Mail, responding to industry calls for improved service speed and reliability. According to an update published in Mailers Hub News and shared by USPS with its mailing partners, select First-Class Mail volumes will once again be transported via commercial air cargo. Additionally, the USPS is offering a new SCF pallet discount for First-Class Mail, effective August 25, 2025, for mail deposited at designated air entry points.
This move marks a notable policy shift following USPS’s 2021 decision to reroute much of its First-Class Mail delivery through its surface transportation network to reduce costs. Mailers across the country had voiced concerns about declining service standards, particularly for longer-distance mail. With the new air transport plan and corresponding SCF pallet discount, USPS is aiming to restore some of the speed and efficiency lost during the network overhaul.
The SCF pallet discount of $0.049 per piece will apply to qualifying First-Class Mail prepared on full pallets and entered at Surface Transfer Centers (STCs) designated as air entry points. The initiative is expected to improve delivery timelines and provide cost savings for high-volume mailers who utilize the USPS commercial network.
