New Italy-Wide Study Puts Anilox Management at the Center of Flexo’s Sustainability Challenge

A new industry study from Converting Magazine promoted with Simec Group is set to analyze the Italian anilox market, focusing on how flexographic printers use, manage, and maintain one of the most critical components in the production process. The survey follows findings from a July 2025 market snapshot that showed rapid change across the sector, including widespread use of recyclable monomaterial films and a growing shift from solvent-based inks toward UV LED and water-based systems. As substrates and ink chemistries evolve, anilox configuration, cleaning, and lifecycle management are becoming increasingly central to print quality, waste reduction, and sustainable production.

The earlier survey also revealed that cost remains the biggest barrier to adopting greener practices, but it hinted at a less visible form of sustainability already taking shape in the pressroom. Some respondents identified anilox regeneration and related component recovery as practical, low-impact strategies, suggesting that refurbishment may offer both economic and environmental advantages. The new study will explore how common those practices are in Italy and whether anilox lifecycle management is being treated as a strategic discipline or still handled on a case-by-case basis.

The research will also examine whether anilox maintenance is keeping up with the wider automation trend in flexo. While many printers have adopted automated plate mounting and inline quality control, anilox care often remains more manual and reactive. The survey maps purchasing habits, supplier relationships, technical support, standardization practices, and end-of-life management to provide a detailed view of the state of the art in Italy and identify where the next gains in efficiency, consistency, and sustainability may come from.
