Corey Reardon says Label Industry Leads the Way in Material Innovation

Corey Reardon, the Materials Ambassador for Labelexpo in Barcelona, tells us that the label and packaging sectors are entering a new phase of growth, one shaped by moderated demand, sustainability imperatives, and ongoing supply chain pressures. Materials remain at the center of this transformation, spanning papers, films, adhesives, inks, and silicones across formats such as pressure-sensitive, glue-applied, shrink sleeve, and in-mold. With consumer preferences shifting toward environmentally responsible products, material suppliers are under increasing pressure to innovate while maintaining performance and cost-efficiency.

At Labelexpo 2025, he says the focus will be on breakthrough materials and technologies designed to deliver both environmental and economic benefits. These include bioplastics from renewable plant sources, recyclable and biodegradable substrates, and papers with higher recycled content and eco-friendly coatings. Water-based adhesives and inks are emerging as strong alternatives, while advances in material science are yielding thinner, lighter solutions that reduce waste without compromising durability. Smart materials,  including RFID-enabled substrates, will also be at the forefront, opening new avenues for transparency, interactivity, and consumer engagement.

Despite challenges like raw material shortages and geopolitical uncertainty, the label industry has demonstrated resilience by pushing forward with sustainable and high-value innovations. Looking ahead, nanotechnology, regenerative materials, and hybrid laminates promise to further redefine what’s possible. By continuing to invest in eco-friendly materials, strengthen supply chains, and embrace advanced technologies, the label industry is positioning itself not only to meet global sustainability goals but also to drive the future of packaging.
