CCL Labels Targets Circular Packaging for Fast-Growing Functional Drinks Market

CCL Labels is expanding its focus on circular packaging solutions to support the rapidly growing functional drinks category, where sustainability is becoming as critical as health claims and ingredient transparency. As brands innovate across probiotics, prebiotics, protein-enriched beverages, and “better-for-you” alcoholic refreshers, packaging compatibility with recycling systems is increasingly influencing purchasing and brand perception.

The functional beverage market, driven largely by developments in the United States, now spans a wide range of packaging formats, including PET and glass bottles, cans, and flexible structures. With growth accelerating, CCL Labels is positioning its sustainability-focused technologies to help brands reduce environmental impact while maintaining the shelf presence required in a competitive retail environment.

CCL’s circularity-driven portfolio includes EcoFloat WHITE, a floatable sleeve solution that separates efficiently from PET during recycling. The technology delivers light-blocking performance in the label, allowing brands with light-sensitive products to move from opaque containers to transparent PET that can be recycled in a closed loop. For glass containers, EcoShear pressure-sensitive labels are engineered to shear cleanly during recycling, reducing contamination in cullet streams.

Additional solutions include WashOff labels that detach reliably during standard washing processes for returnable glass and PET bottles, supporting reuse and refill models, and EcoStream PSL labels designed to be removed in one clean piece during PET recycling to improve recyclate purity. For emerging beverage formats, CCL also offers monomaterial pouches that reduce material complexity and support recyclability through single-material construction.

“Functional drinks sit at the intersection of health, innovation, and sustainability,” said Reinhard Streit, Group Vice President Food & Beverage Global at CCL Labels. He noted that while brands are moving quickly to meet demand for targeted wellness solutions, packaging must evolve at the same pace to support circularity without sacrificing differentiation or consumer communication.

With a global footprint and deep expertise in beverage labeling and packaging, CCL Labels is positioning itself as a partner for functional drink brands seeking to pair product innovation with measurable progress toward closed-loop packaging systems. The company says continued investment in recyclable, reusable, and material-efficient solutions will be central to enabling sustainable growth across the category.
