At Uteco’s Demo Center in Verona, industrial-scale trials proved the viability of printing sustainable barrier coatings under demanding summer conditions, with the OnyxGO press running at high speeds without limitation. UPM’s Solide™ Lucent, Asendo™, and Asendo™ Pro paper grades were tested, with Siegwerk’s CIRKIT BAR SEAL overprint varnishes applied in varying layers to create scalable barrier effects. Early results demonstrated significant improvements in water and oil resistance, with all coatings fully compliant for direct food contact.
By showing that flexo-printed barrier coatings can match or exceed the performance of traditional plastic-based methods, the project highlights flexography’s role in driving the transition toward fiber-based, circular packaging. The OnyxGO’s precision, combined with Uteco’s technical expertise, enables converters and brand owners to pursue sustainable solutions without sacrificing speed or performance. Uteco will showcase these advances at Messe Dusseldorf at the K trade fair, 8-15 October in Hall 4, Stand B30.
