J.S. McCarthy Sets Record with Sentinel iPro-Equipped Heidelberg Press

Sentinel has announced that J.S. McCarthy Packaging + Print has set a record for folding carton production using its iPro Ink Management System on a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 press. The Augusta, Maine-based, employee-owned company produced 429,246 net sellable sheets (431,451 gross) in just 24 hours. Running at 21,000 sheets per hour across two twelve-hour shifts, the iPro system maintained consistent color and precise ink control without interrupting production, which Sentinel says underscores the system’s reliability under extreme demand.

Over its 75-year history, J.S. McCarthy has evolved from a high-end commercial printer into a packaging powerhouse, with 80% of its revenue now coming from folding carton work for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors. The company recently expanded its Augusta facility by 12,000 square feet to meet growing demand. According to Pressroom Manager Randy Robbins, Sentinel’s automated ink management has been a cornerstone of their operations for over 25 years, enabling cleaner pressrooms, reduced waste, and faster ink changeovers. The system’s 8-pound cartridges last longer, utilize over 98% of their ink, and swap out in under 10 seconds.

Sentinel Sales Director David Doucette praised the achievement, noting that it reflects both exceptional teamwork and technology. “It takes the right people and the right technology to accomplish something like this, and we’re honored that Sentinel has played a role in their success over the past 25 years,” he said. Robbins added his endorsement: “I personally wouldn’t run a press without an iPro on it. All in all, I’m a huge Sentinel supporter.”
