Koenig & Bauer Launches Protected at Print to Combat Counterfeiting and Strengthen Supply Chains

Koenig & Bauer (US/CA) announced the launch of its “protected at print” initiative, an advanced protection solution that integrates security features directly into the printing process. At the core of the program is Stegano technology, which invisibly conceals data, such as hidden codes, images, or logos, into artwork or varnish during prepress. These invisible markers, undetectable even under magnification, can later be authenticated using a simple smartphone application, allowing brands, resellers, and consumers to instantly verify product authenticity.

“Packaging has evolved beyond simply protecting products—it is now a smart asset,” said Julian Schubert, CEO of Koenig & Bauer Vision & Protection. “‘protected at print’ safeguards brands against counterfeiting while creating new opportunities for authentication, connectivity, and traceability. This solution empowers printing companies to deliver added value, strengthen customer loyalty, and unlock new business models.”

Marc Hunsänger, Director of Protection Technologies, added that Stegano ensures each folding carton is unique, offering discreet but powerful protection without altering design aesthetics. Beyond security, the technology also enhances customer engagement by enabling brands to integrate product verification into consumer-facing apps. For printers, the benefits include new revenue streams, competitive differentiation, and the ability to transform everyday packaging into intelligent assets. With “protected at print,” Koenig & Bauer aims to redefine packaging as a platform for safety, transparency, and brand trust.
