Don Quijote’s Frozen Pasta Takes a Greener Path with Asahi’s Water-Washable Flexo Technology

In  move toward sustainable packaging innovation, Don Quijote Co., Ltd., part of Pan Pacific International Holdings Corporation, has adopted water-based flexographic printing for its private-label Yaba Mori Pasta series. This initiative, achieved in collaboration with Sagawa Printing Co., Ltd. and Asahi Kasei (parent company of Asahi Photoproducts), replaces conventional solvent-based gravure printing with a process that slashes CO₂ emissions by approximately 60%.

To achieve the shift, Don Quijote Co. is using Asahi’s AWP™ water-washable flexographic plates, which eliminate the need for organic solvents during development and reduce VOC emissions. Combined with water-based inks, the technology offers a high-quality, low-impact printing solution ideal for food packaging. Sagawa Printing worked closely with Asahi Kasei to fine-tune the flexographic process, ensuring premium performance while advancing environmental responsibility.

This project exemplifies the principles of Asahi’s Solvent ZERO initiative, which promotes a global transition to safer, cleaner, and more sustainable print production. As the packaging industry grapples with climate concerns, Don Quijote’s pasta packaging presents a compelling case for innovation that balances sustainability with print excellence.
