Müller Martini Introduces Diamant MC 30 as Entry Point to Automated Hardcover Production

Müller Martini expanded its hardcover portfolio with the introduction of the Diamant MC 30, a compact and highly automated book line positioned as an ideal gateway to industrial hardcover production. The new configuration is aimed at companies currently relying on manual or semi-manual processes and seeking a competitive, scalable entry into automated book manufacturing.

Running at speeds of up to 30 cycles per minute, the Diamant MC 30 combines fast setup times with a high degree of automation. Built on the same Motion Control Technology as Müller Martini’s higher-capacity Diamant MC 60, the system delivers precise movements and operational flexibility typically found in larger production lines. Intelligent single drives are used at key stations, including rounding, transport chains, and casing-in, helping to reduce downtime and increase output consistency.

One example of this design approach is the servo-driven rubdown device, which is perfectly synchronized with the paternoster knife. This ensures optimal rubdown of the book case and precise seating of the book block, contributing to consistent quality across production runs. Müller Martini said this level of control gives the Diamant MC 30 a clear advantage over manual workflows, where consistency and repeatability are harder to achieve.

Automation plays a central role in improving reliability. Integrated checks monitor headband supply, incorrect book block positioning, and double cases, while book thickness is measured in the rounder rollers to ensure downstream stations are configured correctly. For companies moving from manual binding, Müller Martini described this as a significant leap in process stability and quality assurance.

Ease of operation is another focus. The Diamant MC 30 features a central data entry area with measuring devices and clear visualization, allowing operators to prepare the next job while production is running. Stored production data enables quick setup of repeat orders, reducing makeready times and simplifying training for new staff.

The system incorporates many features typically associated with high-end hardcover lines, including controlled spine rounding, double backing for durable folds, ribbon gluing, a headbanding station with integrated premelter, long joint forming, and fold pressing. Data transfer to peripheral equipment, such as book counter stackers, supports workflow integration and networking within the bindery.

In terms of product range, the Diamant MC 30 supports both straight and round spines, with or without ribbon, and processes a wide variety of paper types, sizes, and grammages. Both hard and flex cases can be separated and handled reliably, giving manufacturers flexibility without compromising quality.

With the Diamant MC 30, Müller Martini positions itself as offering a practical, cost-effective entry into automated hardcover production, enabling printers and binders to modernize operations, improve efficiency, and compete in higher-value book markets.
