Gelato's Sustainability Report: Local Production is Becoming Essential

As global production models strain under the weight of trade disruptions and rising customer expectations, Gelato’s 2024 Sustainability Report positions local, on-demand manufacturing as a smarter, greener path forward. The company’s first Double Materiality Assessment confirmed what it has long advocated: speculative, centralized production is no longer viable. “Local production is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s becoming essential,” said Henrik Müller-Hansen, Founder and CEO.

Through its dual platforms—GelatoCreate for creators and GelatoConnect for PSPs—Gelato is creating a new, distributed manufacturing ecosystem. In 2024 alone, 99% of orders were fulfilled in-region, early users of GelatoConnect cut inventory overhead by 20%, and Printique used the model to fulfill over 20,000 personalized orders sustainably. “Sustainability at Gelato isn't something we layer on top,” Müller-Hansen added. “It’s embedded in how our platform operates: producing only what’s sold, closer to where it’s needed.”
