Ricoh Brings Fabrics to Life with AI-Enabled Conductive Inkjet Technology

Ricoh has unveiled an innovative conductive printing technique that combines inkjet printing and artificial intelligence to embed “smart” sensors directly onto textiles and upholstery, transforming everyday fabrics into interactive, responsive surfaces. This advanced technology was showcased through an immersive installation titled “Soul and Soil” during Milan Design Week. The exhibit allowed visitors to experience how interactive textiles could monitor personal parameters—such as movement or emotional states—and convert them into dynamic visual or auditory outputs in real-time, merging well-being, design, and data-driven interactivity. 

Ricoh envisions transformative applications across industries—from interior design and smart furniture to healthcare and workspace environments—where textiles can serve as both functional and sensory elements. The technology taps into Ricoh’s broader “Ricoh 3L” prototyping initiative, which focuses on enhancing teamwork, individuality, and emotional wellness through advanced, connective design solutions
