KC Book Manufacturing has taken a decisive step into digital with the installation of its first roll-fed inkjet press, the SCREEN Truepress JET 520HD mono, marking a new chapter in the company’s evolution. Known for its strong legacy and long-tenured workforce, KC faced a significant shift after the recent retirement of three veteran employees. To fill the gap, the company transitioned fully to digital, retiring its aging web offset press and handing over 70% of production to the new inkjet platform.
Owner Rick Smith noted, “The digital inkjet press from SCREEN has made me more competitive. I was able to restore three former customers and acquire a brand new one since the installation.” The press’s high-resolution output, flexibility in handling coated and uncoated papers, and minimal paper spoilage are helping KC thrive in its niche of short-run books for small to mid-size publishers. With fulfillment supported by a unique social enterprise, and plans to expand finishing capabilities, KC Book is building a future shaped by smart investments in automation and community values.
