UPM Energy has announced an investment of over €20 million to modernize the Tyrvää hydropower plant located in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland. The large-scale refurbishment project aims to ensure the long-term safe operation of the facility while enhancing its ability to provide balancing power to the Finnish electricity grid. The modernization program is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.
The project includes the refurbishment of both turbine-generator units at the plant. Key upgrades will involve installing new generator stators, overhauling the rotors, and replacing the existing oil-lubricated turbine runners with water-lubricated versions to significantly reduce environmental risks. In addition, the plant will receive modern automation and control systems, including new turbine controllers and a dedicated emergency automation system to strengthen dam safety.
