UPM and Paramelt Advance Circular Packaging with Bio-Based, Grease-Resistant Food Solution

UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt have jointly introduced a new bio-based food packaging concept that combines performance with improved environmental outcomes. The solution pairs advanced barrier-base papers with a biodegradable, water-based coating to create a recyclable, home-compostable packaging format suitable for bakery, fast-food, and convenience applications.

The concept integrates UPM’s Solide Lucent and Prego papers with Paramelt’s Aquavate Bio SB 2383 coating, delivering effective grease resistance and reliable heat-sealing performance. Designed to operate at low coat weights, the solution maintains functionality while reducing material usage and can be processed on existing packaging lines, including vertical form-fill-seal systems. This compatibility facilitates easier adoption by converters and brand owners seeking to transition to more sustainable materials.

Both companies emphasized that the development addresses growing demand for scalable, fiber-based alternatives that meet regulatory and consumer expectations. By combining material innovation with production-ready performance, the collaboration demonstrates how packaging can evolve to support circular economy goals without compromising efficiency or product protection.
