WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers, and FIPP, the International Federation of Periodical Publishers, are merging their operations to form the largest and most diverse global alliance in the publishing industry. Effective January 1, 2026, the combined organization will unite news, magazine, and special-interest publishers, along with technology companies, under a single global umbrella to strengthen the industry’s collective voice and resilience.
The merger reflects a strategic response to profound shifts in the media ecosystem, where traditional boundaries between news and magazine publishing are increasingly blurred. Both organizations cited shared challenges around content creation, audience engagement, monetization, and technology adoption as drivers for consolidation. By pooling expertise, the alliance aims to enable cross-sector learning, combining the magazine sector’s strengths in commercial innovation with the news industry’s experience in digital subscriptions, retention, and reader revenue models.
Leadership from both organizations emphasised that the merger is rooted in a shared commitment to sustainable, independent journalism. WAN-IFRA president Ladina Heimgartner described the integration as a pivotal moment that strengthens the entire media ecosystem, while FIPP chair Yulia Boyle highlighted the importance of retaining FIPP’s unique identity and flagship Congress within the new structure. Former FIPP members will form a new Consumer Lifestyle and Special Interest Media community within WAN-IFRA, led by an advisory board, with continued access to events, training, and an expanded global knowledge hub. Together, WAN-IFRA and FIPP aim to provide publishers worldwide with stronger advocacy, deeper insight, and greater collective power in an increasingly complex digital and AI-driven environment.
