Belgium-based Desmedt Labels achieved another industry first with the installation of a Mark Andy Digital Pro MAX hybrid press fitted with a Martin Automatic MBSC non-stop unwind butt splicer. For CEO Henri Köhler, the fourth-generation leader of the 1889-founded company, the investment is about productivity rather than headline speed. By eliminating manual roll changes that previously cost an estimated five minutes per job, the hybrid-and-splice combination delivers an additional hour of production per shift, translating to roughly 750 extra production hours annually across a three-shift operation.
The Digital Pro MAX combines a 330mm web platform with CMYK plus white dry toner digital printing, flexo stations, laminating, semi-rotary die cutting, and slitting, all on a modular architecture designed for future upgrades. The addition of Martin’s compact MBSC splice system enables two full 4,000-meter rolls to be loaded and changed without stopping the press. Laser-assisted tape alignment and guided preparation systems ensure splice accuracy, minimizing material waste and maintaining consistent web control throughout production.
Desmedt’s commitment to automated production has evolved over more than a decade, with multiple Mark Andy Performance Series P7 flexo lines already operating with non-stop splicers. By integrating digital hybrid capability with continuous unwind technology, the company further strengthens its ability to handle short runs, customization, and premium label applications with maximum uptime. With 45 employees and annual sales of approximately €15 million, Desmedt continues to expand capacity through strategic automation investments that prioritize efficiency, waste reduction, and long-term ROI.
