Domtar's Clermont Mill Uses Industry First Energy Recovery Program

Domtar's Clermont Mill in Quebec, a near-century-old paper producer, partnered with Hydro-Québec and FP Innovations to launch a groundbreaking energy recovery project that dramatically improved its efficiency. By installing heat exchangers and two specialized water-to-water heat pumps, the mill reduced its annual energy consumption by 15 million kWh — enough to power 880 homes — and saved CA$800,000 each year. Supported by CA$3 million in funding from Hydro-Québec, the project took two years to complete and marked the first integration of such heat pump technology in Quebec’s pulp and paper sector. This initiative positions the Clermont Mill as a leader in sustainable innovation for the industry. Read more here.
