drupa Prize 2025 Honors Anna Maria Jonietz for Groundbreaking Work on Medici Artwork

The drupa Prize 2025 has been awarded to art historian Anna Maria Jonietz for her exceptional dissertation examining the Medici self-portrait collection between 1650 and 1723. Her work sheds new light on how these portraits functioned as strategic tools within the broader discourses of art and science, offering a fresh lens on image politics and early modern representation. The dissertation, praised for its methodological innovation and interdisciplinary depth, was awarded summa cum laude and bridges historical context with contemporary media critique.

“This award not only recognises exceptional scientific achievement, but also the courage to take an innovative look at historical image strategies – an impulse that has an impact far beyond art history,” said Dr Andreas Pleßke, CEO of Koenig & Bauer and Chairman of the drupa Committee. Presented annually by Messe Düsseldorf, the drupa Prize supports publication of top humanities dissertations at Heinrich Heine University. Jonietz, now a consultant at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, continues to shape critical thought beyond academia.
