FUNKE Technology, the IT and innovation arm of the FUNKE Media Group, implemented a centralized, automated production workflow built on Enfocus Switch, callas pdfToolbox, and ColorLogic ColorSuite. This strategic investment was made to standardize print production across the group’s key locations in Berlin, Braunschweig, Erfurt, Essen, Hamburg, and Ismaning, enabling greater process reliability, scalability, and color consistency. The rollout is already benefiting newspaper, ad, e-paper, and external job processing, with future plans to expand the workflow to other production areas.

Previously, production workflows at FUNKE were inconsistent, leaving room for inefficiencies and potential delays. By introducing a fully integrated system using pdfToolbox Server and Dispatcher, with scalable load balancing via LicenseServer, FUNKE now ensures streamlined data processing even during peak hours. ColorLogic’s ZePrA color server and CoPrA profiling tools enhance output precision by optimizing color separation and ink usage. The system also includes fallback capabilities for uninterrupted processing of time-sensitive daily newspaper output.

Supported by Impressed and the participating software vendors, the implementation has improved maintainability and increased print quality across the board. “Without the seamless interaction between Enfocus, callas, and ColorLogic solutions, we couldn’t have achieved this level of automation,” said Denis Freund, Business Consultant at FUNKE Technology. “The new workflow delivers exactly what we aimed for—standardization, automation, and better performance with fewer manual interventions.”
