Research consultancy Smithers forecasts the global packaging market to hit $1.2 trillion in 2025, spotlighting generative AI (GenAI) as a key enabler of growth and innovation. According to the report, GenAI is reshaping packaging workflows—fueling hyper-personalised design, accelerating prototyping, and integrating seamlessly with digital printing and automated production systems. “Now it’s AI,” said Josh Brooks of Easyfairs, noting the $2 trillion in projected global AI infrastructure investment by 2026. GenAI allows brands to reduce trial-and-error costs, respond faster to consumer demand, and gain actionable insights into buying behavior. Beyond design, AI is optimizing supply chain logistics, enabling real-time inventory management, adaptive robotics, and sustainable practices like right-sizing and waste reduction. The report also predicts AI could outperform creative professionals by 2030, signaling a seismic shift in packaging design and execution as tools increasingly generate text, code, images, and even 3D visuals based on market data. The future of packaging, Smithers suggests, is one where intelligence is built in from concept to delivery.
