Mako Core 8.4 announced a maintenance-led update, but the release carries wider significance for developers and print workflow providers. Alongside broader improvements in stability, performance, and rendering accuracy, we're introducing Apex PDF Output in beta for selected customers to evaluate. Although not yet generally available, the new capability is positioned as a major step forward in how Mako generates PDF content. The company highlights faster, more efficient workflows, with a planned formal introduction in Mako 9.0 as part of the broader Apex Performance initiative.
One of the most practical additions in Mako Core 8.4 is a new output class that can write PWG Raster directly from any Mako-supported page description language, including PDF, PCL, and XPS. Combined with Mako’s existing job modification capabilities, including booklet imposition, this creates a stronger route into driverless workflows in enterprise print. The release also builds on existing support for PCLm, the PDF-based wrapped raster format already used in these environments, and adds new sample code intended to show users the most efficient way to implement these workflows.
Beyond the headline features, Mako 8.4.0 puts strong emphasis on production reliability and output consistency. The update includes improvements in color handling, transparency, font rendering, and overprint behavior, while also addressing performance and scalability issues associated with large and complex files through optimizations to multi-threaded processing and image handling. Customer-reported fixes targeting rendering errors, stability issues, and PDF and PostScript edge cases round out the release, making this a version that strengthens the core platform today while preparing for the larger performance story expected with Mako 9.0.
