Metsä Board Ends Production at Tako Board Mill in Tampere

Metsä Board officially ceased operations at its historic Tako board mill in Tampere on June 17, 2025, shutting down board machine BM1 as part of a strategic move to enhance profitability and cost efficiency. The closure was first announced in March following change negotiations, with the company citing the need to streamline operations. Production of Tako’s board products has now been fully transferred to Metsä Board’s Kyro mill, ensuring uninterrupted customer deliveries.

To support the transition, Metsä Board launched a robust re-employment program for the mill’s 191 employees. Initiatives included recruitment events within the Metsä Group, partnerships with employment authorities, and job coaching. As of the shutdown date, nearly half of the workforce—95 individuals—had already secured new employment. Timo Ahonen, VP of the Tako mill, emphasized the importance of supporting employees through internal recruitment and relocation assistance, highlighting the company's commitment to personnel welfare during this challenging period.

With production concluded, Metsä Board has begun the process of cleaning and preparing the site for equipment dismantling, which is scheduled for 2026. All machinery and production systems will be cleaned and decommissioned by the end of 2025. While the company has started securing permits for external dismantling, the future use of the Tako property remains undecided.
