Print and Paper Deliver Environmental Wins in Recycling and Renewables

The print and paper industry continues to deliver strong environmental progress, with Europe reaching a world-leading 75.1% recycling rate for paper and 83.1% for paper packaging in 2024. This momentum is mirrored in the U.S., which reported a 68.2% paper recycling rate. Combined with a global shift toward renewable energy—now surpassing coal as the top source of electricity—these developments benefit a sector already powered by more than 60% renewable energy in Europe. “Paper is the most recycled material in the EU,” said Valeria Salvadori, Chair of the European Paper Recycling Council, underscoring the industry's benchmark-setting performance.

Further strengthening the case for print, new research from Germany’s Oeko-Institut shows printed media can have a carbon footprint up to five times lower than digital alternatives. Meanwhile, brands are pushing ahead with paper-based packaging innovations, from M&S's FSC-approved materials to Tetra Pak’s juice cartons with paper-based barriers. As the EU tightens circularity regulations, paper remains the most viable and sustainable path forward—proving that print not only informs and connects but also leads in environmental responsibility.
