For years, Printing Impressions, based in the US, has published a list of the top-performing printing companies in the US. Once again, we have reworked the list a bit to make it more interesting. Of course, we are not allowed to publish the altered list, as it’s a property of NAPCO Media. Still, we can again only suggest adding productivity per employee to the list, as it suddenly becomes a list where printers of all sizes can compare themselves.
Companies that flash the list as the biggest companies in the US. Number one on the Printing Impressions list, RR Donnelly, dropped from 224 in 2023 to number 267 in 2024, and besides a drop in productivity, Companies that flash the list as the biggest companies in the US. Number one on the Printing Impressions list, RR Donnelly, dropped from 224 in 2023 to number 267 in 2024, and besides a drop in productivity, going from $192,382 to $154,903 per employee. This shall also be seen with a massive drop in revenue of 720 million dollars - I would be concerned if I were CEO Tom Quinlan, though the revenue is more aligned with previous years' results! Another high-ranking company, Cimpress, enters the productivity list as number 171, up from number 202 last year.
So why is productivity an interesting measure? First and foremost, RR Donnelly has 30,000 employees and revenue of billions of dollars. For most printing companies, these numbers are unthinkable and only serve as gossip.
You can always compare your productivity by dividing your revenue by the number of full-time employees, and then you have the productivity per employee.
Your number is comparable to the list, but even more important, you can measure how far you are from the average, which in the Top 300 list is $252,930. This number is, however, not comparable, as the Top 300 list has some companies that are “strange.” For example, the number one on the productivity list is a company called Orora North America, with a productivity of more than a million dollars per employee, but this Australian company has the same revenue and productivity, so either the numbers are wrong, or maybe they are more of a financial character.
The average productivity per employee has dropped from $262,000 to $252,000 - so nothing dramatic but the average starts at number 115 upwards, and the companies upwards are amazing, as they have productivity between $252,000 and $1,024,306 with seven above $500K and nine between $400K and $500K - and these numbers are extremely incredible and I am proud to say that we have visited six of the top-performing printing companies in America - listed top down here: Litho Press (5), Crossmark (6) (to be published soon), Command NJ (15), Lithographix (16) (to be published soon), SG360 (24) and finally Courier Graphics (32) - you can see all the films, by clicking on their names on the list.
I hope that Printing Impression will start investigating other measures. I know it can be difficult, but productivity is easy and very valuable—as you, as a printer, can compare it to what’s seen as the top-performing American printers.
As an international media outlet, I am proud to share that INKISH is, by far, the only media outlet in the world that has covered most American printing companies. Thank you, America. 2025 seems to be equally amazing!
Long live the Printing Industry!
