Five weeks after the U.S. ended its duty-free de minimis exemption, international postal volumes to the country remain sharply down—still 70.7% lower than before the 29 August policy shift, according to the Universal Postal Union (UPU). In response, the UPU has now released a fully integrated customs solution for its 192-member network to help resume operations.
“The UPU is now launching a fully-fledged solution that will allow every postal operator in its network – no matter how big or small – to meet customs requirements,” said Lati Matata, Director of the UPU’s Postal Technology Centre.
The solution enables postal operators to calculate, collect, and remit duties to U.S. Customs and Border Protection using the existing Customs Declaration System, adding a vital customer-facing interface. With only a few operators having resumed US shipments, the UPU is fast-tracking deployment to restore mail flows.
