IOP Empowers Online Printers with Hands-On ESG Bootcamp for Sustainable Business Growth

The Initiative Online Print e.V. (IOP) has launched a practical new bootcamp in Essen to help member companies meet rising sustainability expectations through structured Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting. Developed by the IOP ESG working group, the workshop delivered a step-by-step roadmap for preparing tailored, standards-compliant sustainability reports. While not directly subject to the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), small and medium-sized online print businesses are increasingly under pressure from clients, partners, and financial institutions to demonstrate ESG accountability.

Guided by ESG expert Felix Zimmermann, the bootcamp focused on the VSME standard for voluntary reporting and emphasized pragmatic strategies for materiality analysis, metrics collection, and actionable goal-setting. “Many online printers already have energy-saving and social impact initiatives in place,” Zimmermann explained. “This bootcamp helps them translate those efforts into structured, strategic communication.” Board member Roland Keppler added that IOP’s goal is to demystify ESG and embed sustainability into core business strategy, not treat it as an optional extra.

The IOP continues to take a leadership role in helping the print industry navigate regulatory and market challenges. Beyond ESG, the association is also driving industry-wide progress through initiatives such as the EUDR-X compliance framework and bootcamps focused on artificial intelligence. “Sustainability and digital transformation are the twin engines of innovation in our sector,” said IOP CEO Bernd Zipper. “Our mission is to equip members with tools that not only ensure compliance but also enhance competitiveness.”
